Case Studies of a Real-time Journey Advice

Case 1

The Sprinter of 08:54 from Maarsen station to Amsterdam Central station was delayed with 5 minutes. Therefore the transfer at Amsterdam Bijlmer station to the Intercity of 09:15 to Schiphol was not possible anymore. The Real-time Journey Planner advised to take a later connection to Hoofddorp/Schiphol. The total travel time increaded from 40 to 55 minutes.

Case 2

The situation at 's Hertogenbosch station on 10th June 2010 at 12:42 hrs was:

A normal, static journey advice from Tilburg to Amsterdam with a departure time around 12:30 would be:

An extra or delayed train, like the ICE departing from 's Hertogenbosch at 13:15, will never be incorporated in a static journey advise. But the HP Real-time Journey Planner does take extra trains into account, as well as the (expected) real-time arrival and departure times. The real-time journey advice, given at 12:30 for the same journey was:

The train from Tilburg would depart with a delay of two minutes and was expected to arrive with just one minute delay. The transfer time in 's Hertogenbosch was five minutes (from 13:11 till 13:15), which was sufficient.

HP Journey Planner Test Suite

The first delivery of the JP Test Suite in a AIX MQ Series environment was done last month.

The Test Suite can be used to test a new release or a new configuration. The Test Suite contains a program to request a large number of advices from the HP Journey Planner, for example from all stations to all stations for a certain day.

The test procedure is performed twice; once in the original configuration and once with a new version of the Journey Planner or a changed resource-file. The output files can be very large; larger than a normal diff-tool can handle.

Therefore a dedicated diff-tool is used to compare the two output files and to generate a document that lists the differences (in docbook format). By using open source software this format can be transformed in a human readable format (html, pdf or chm).

HP Journey Planner on smartphones

Last month NS made their mobile journey planner, named 'NS Reisplanner Xtra', available to various smartphone platforms, such as iPhone, Java, Blackberry and Windows Mobile. To be followed shortly by Android en Symbian.

The application is placed in the App Store. The free NS application will compete with the iPhone application 'Trein', which costs 2,39. The popular 'Trein' is developed by a student Information Science and is on the market for more than one year.

Both 'Trein' and 'NS Reisplanner Xtra' are fed by HP's Real-Time Travel Information Services, either via a direct link or via the site for mobile users
