Real-time Information Services set up new record!
Due to heavy snowfall, technical breakdowns of both rolling stock and rail infrastructure and major changes to the train services, the Dutch travelers put a heavy load on the Real-time Information Services of NS. For the month December a record was set of 20 million real-time travel advices with a peak of 1.2 million on a single day. In the same month the record of real-time departure times provided was broken as well and is set now at 50 million.
By acknowledging that real-time travel information is a crucial service to travelers and staff, NS has taken several actions to improve the reliability of the service, such as the renewal of the hardware and a multi-year extension of the HP Real-time Information Service contract.
Flyrail combines train, plane and bus travel from local bus stop to European destinations
SJ and SAS have created Flyrail.se, a new website where you can book your journeys within Sweden and through to Europe. Go to wwww.flyrail.se to book travel by train, SAS planes and local transport companies in one and the same booking.
- Hötorget underground station - Paris
- Borlänge C - Amsterdam
- Linköping University - London Heathrow
The booking function on the Flyrail website is driven by the HP Journey Planner.
Just-in-Timetable module is powerful tool for updating Travel Information
With the Just In Timetable module (JIT) rail operators get their hands on a tool to generate real-time travel information. Changes, such as cancelled trains or extra trains/busses, can be made easily with JIT. The updates are processed by the HP Real-time Information Service in the same way as a real-time data feed from an infrastructure manager and likewise made available for the Real-time Departure Service and the Real-time Journey Planner.
This winter NS made numerous adjustments to the time tables with the JIT module in order to provide real-time travel information and real-time journey advices to the public while the updates from the Traffic Management System of ProRail were not available.
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment of The Netherlands, drs. M.H. Schutlz van Haegen, announced in her letter of 27th January 2011 that the implementation of "Just In Time Table" is one of the measures to improve travel information during major disruptions.
The Finish and Swedish Railways have ordered the new functionality also and are currently testing the new software. It is expected that the JIT module will soon provide real-time travel information to the staff and the travelers in Scandinavia.
In the spotlight of Railforum
